Where Have All the Job Seekers Gone? Monster.; The Case of the Missing Online Job Seekers - A Battle of Pop-Ups Gone Bad, while Monster Continues to Grow
From the month of March to April, Monster's 15.4 million unique visitors grew to 16.3 million unique visitors. During that same span, Monster's closest competitor's 7.5 million unique visitors shrunk to just 4.5 million unique visitors, losing three million unique visitors on route to a total of roughly one-quarter that of Monster's. This can be attributed to the removal of a gimmick known as pop-up windows, the marketing ploy that increases traffic, but fails to increase market share, as page views and average minutes spent on the site per user plummet with the tactic. For April's traffic, the elimination of pop-up traffic caused the number of unique visitors to that site to decrease by 40 percent while their share of the market, as defined by online career eyeball minutes, stayed flat. However, Monster grew in unique visitors without sacrificing page views and average minutes spent on the site, which are the overriding barometer for quality traffic and an active job seeker visitor base.
Having broken site traffic records in every consecutive month in 2002, Monster continues to be the prominent career management destination. According to leading site traffic research companies, Monster is the number one destination for career seekers, achieving several records in site traffic measurements during the month of April, including an all-time high 47 million unique visits, according to I/PRO.
Media Metrix
According to independent research conducted by Media Metrix, Monster was the 21st most visited property(1) overall on the Internet during the month of April, representing its highest property ranking ever. Monster maintained its stronghold this month with an average of 26.9 pages viewed per user and a power ranking(2) of 376.3, nearly four times that of its closest competitor's power ranking of 94.6. Monthly unique visitors to Monster increased from 5.7 million during April 2001 to an all-time high 16.3 million for April 2002, an increase of 186 percent. Monster now outdistances its closest competitor by more than 11 million unique visitors. Monster further demonstrated its strength in the online careers industry with a 49 percent share of online career eyeball minutes(3), while its closest competitor represented only a 12 percent share.
Nielsen//NetRatings
According to the Nielsen//NetRatings' MarketView report for the month of April, Monster received over 13.2 million unique visitors, more than four times its closest competitor's 2.9 million unique visitors.

"Monster continues to exemplify the leadership qualities that have defined our business goals since our inception in 1994. With 16.3 million unique visitors during the month of April, we have nearly four times more traffic than our closest competitor, with our page views and minutes spent per user proving that our record traffic is still attributable to quality traffic and committed job seekers, " said Jeff Taylor, founder and chairman of Monster. "Through developing products to enhance the consumer experience, these record traffic levels demonstrate that Monster is the ultimate destination for job seekers' career management and employers' recruiting success, as we further differentiate and distance ourselves in the online recruiting marketplace."
