TMP Worldwide Survey Finds Employees Value Advancement Opportunities Most

Examination of Demographics, Gender and Professional Level Evaluates Variances Among Workforce

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 2001--Have you ever wondered what employees really want? Do men and women in the workplace look for different sources of professional fulfillment? Does what employees value most vary depending on industry, gender, and professional level?

Employees mostly want an opportunity for advancement, according to the results of an exhaustive new survey released today by TMP Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ: TMPW), the world's leading supplier of human capital solutions, including the pre-eminent Internet career portal Monster.com(R), and the world's largest Yellow Pages advertising agency. The comprehensive survey offers unique measurements in determining employee retention and satisfaction while providing a valuable tool for measuring the changing demands and desires of today's workforce. The survey was conducted by TMP to examine which attributes of the workplace "make or break" employees' experiences and which contribute most to their professional fulfillment.

The survey, with nearly 4,000 responses, asked respondents to rate 41 characteristics regarding the nature of work, work environment, corporate traditions, growth potential, technology and compensation and benefits. TMP also asked demographic questions and analyzed data according to gender, career level, education level, duration of time with current employer and profession. TMP asked respondents to rate the degree of importance of each attribute as it related to them.

According to the results, employee satisfaction is most directly impacted by the following five key attributes, listed in order of importance:

  1. Advancement opportunities

  2. Competitive salaries

  3. Satisfying work

  4. Recognition of outstanding performance

  5. Offers work that is intellectually stimulating

Nina Jordan, National Research Director for the Advertising and Communications unit of TMP Worldwide, is not surprised with these survey findings. "Most prospective employees that interview for a professional job require competitive salaries and opportunities for growth, not the chance to work with high profile clients or customers," she said. "However, that we found great differences between men's and women's priorities and motivations in the workplace, indicates that Human Resource managers should take into consideration these variances as they build internal and external communication programs."

Highlighting a few of the variances by gender, men, who comprised 61% of respondents, considered a competitive salary to be the most important attribute, while women, at 39% of respondents, considered the opportunity for advancement the ultimate contributing factor to job satisfaction.

TMP's survey found that at every level of employment, from entry level to management professionals, advancement opportunities were valued most. However, entry-level workers most appreciated a company giving them the freedom to work independently, while management professionals most valued their employer offering them prestige in their field.

Almost universally, the survey found that the least important attributes - those that have the smallest impact on employee satisfaction - are jobs requiring any new skills, or working with high-profile clients.

Furthermore, as the TMP Worldwide study breaks out respondents by profession, it revealed that IT professionals put the highest value on satisfying work, and the lowest value on servicing high-profile customers. Moreover, the survey revealed that sales and engineering professionals consider competitive salaries the most important and desirable attribute for their satisfaction on the job. Other professions such as healthcare, consulting, education, and finance varied in what they found as most desirable attributes in employee satisfaction.
