TMP Worldwide CEO Establishes Education Foundation; Will Provide 4-Year College Scholarships to Young Entrepreneurs
16 High School Students in Class of '01 to Benefit, Pre-college Support Begins Now
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2001-- Understanding the strong need for greater educational opportunities in rural, economically underdeveloped areas, Andrew McKelvey, CEO and founder of TMP Worldwide, today announced the establishment of the McKelvey Foundation, a non-profit foundation that will award full, four-year college scholarships to rural high school seniors demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit outside of the classroom.
Sixteen graduating high school seniors from the class of 2001, who otherwise could not have afforded college, have been selected to receive the first McKelvey Foundation scholarships.
"Being an entrepreneur comes from the heart, and doesn't always reveal itself through traditional classroom activities," said McKelvey. "I've been fortunate in the opportunities I've explored to have built a truly entrepreneurial company with TMP. Now I want to use my own success to help others learn and achieve as well - especially those who might not otherwise get such an opportunity. After careful evaluation, we found that the greatest need was in rural schools, particularly among students whose talents are demonstrated outside of the classroom."
The McKelvey Foundation initially targeted high schools in rural school districts in Pennsylvania with the lowest average income and population ratio in the state. A committee of school superintendents, guidance counselors and teachers from the region, along with McKelvey and his wife Dena, selected the winning students with an application process that included interviews and essays about what elements exemplified entrepreneurial spirit. McKelvey had intended to extend ten scholarships, but was so impressed by the students he met, that he decided to offer scholarships to 16 students. The scholarship funds will cover all tuition costs, room and board, regardless of whether the college or university is public or private.
McKelvey chose to begin his initiative in Pennsylvania because he attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, and wanted to provide opportunities to areas that lacked the scholarship programs offered in more urban areas.
The PA districts selected for 2001 are Turkeyfoot Valley, Northern Potter, Galeton, Oswayo Valley, Montrose, Blue Ridge, Ferndale, Union and Forbes Road. Moving forward, the McKelvey Foundation will continue to focus on this region, with expansion planned to the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border and into upstate New York. For the graduating class of 2002, the McKelvey Foundation will offer from 50 to 70 scholarships.
The McKelvey Foundation is taking additional steps to support the scholarship recipients immediately, such as coordinating upcoming trips to New York City and the Seton Hill University campus, and providing the students with laptop computers and color printers. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to maintain a set minimum G.P.A., participate in weekend community service, and work on campus an average of 10 hours per week.
The McKelvey Foundation encourages new ways of learning, demonstrating creative thought through innovation, and taking the risks necessary to fulfill an individual's potential. Through the Foundation, Andrew McKelvey hopes to challenge other corporate leaders to join him in seeking opportunities where by giving back to the community, the leaders of tomorrow can be nurtured. McKelvey Foundation scholarships represent the first programming initiative of the Foundation.
