Monster-Poll shows: 40 percent of the surveyed Germans would leave their familiar environment for their dream job

Around one third of the German respondents negates in favor of their familiar environment

Eschborn, 02 September 2010 – What wouldn’t we have done as a child for our dream job fire fighter or doctor! Even though interests may change over the years, dedication and initiative are still necessary to achieve one’s dream job. Sometimes flexibility in location choice of employment is also needed. A poll of the best-known German online career portal Monster.de shows that 40 percent of the German respondents would abandon their familiar environment for the dream job. 27 percent of the respondents would decide in favor of moving to another city in case a financial advantage in form of a higher salary would result from it. After all, friends and familiar environment are more important than the job to one third of the German respondents.

Move to Another City for Dream Job?

The findings of the poll at a glance:

Would you move to another city for your dream job?

Yes, I would leave my familiar environment for my dream job.

40% (1603)

I would only move to another city for my dream job if I earned more money.

27% (1073)

No, my friends and familiar environment are more important to me than the job.

33% (1303)

The comparison with Austria and Switzerland shows that the willingness to exchange their familiar environment with the dream job is higher in both countries. Thus, 42 percent of the Austrian and even half of the Swiss respondents state that they would move away for their dream job. For 29 percent of the respondents from Austria but only 22 percent from Switzerland the payment plays a role in their decision making. 29 percent of the Austrian respondents and 27 percent of the respondents from Switzerland say that their friends and familiar environment are more important to them than the dream job.

„If the focus is not limited to one particular region during the job search one can increase the opportunities on the job market and for the dream job significantly“, says Marcus Riecke, CEO Central Europe Monster Worldwide. „This step should be thought through in advance and all advantages and disadvantages should be weighed up as well because not everyone wants to abandon friends and familiar environment for that as our poll shows.

4.651 interviewees in Germany, Austria and Switzerland voted from August 9 until August 22, 2010. The career platform Monster regularly conducts surveys on its local as well as global websites on the subject of workplace and career. These polls are not representative; they represent the opinion of Monster users.
