Monster.com Poll Finds That Even Though Adults Did Not Fulfill Childhood Dreams, Kids Are Optimistic for Their Future Careers
Poll Results Kick-Off Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2001
WASHINGTON, and MAYNARD, Mass., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- A Web poll of over 2,300 young people and adults indicates that most young people (65%) believe they can grow up to be anything they want to be, while a majority of adults (52%) do not work in the professions they dreamt about as children. The poll was conducted on Monster.com's Virtual Job Shadowing site at http://www.jobshadow.monster.com . The site, which officially launches on February 2nd, gives young people access to "career mentors" online in support of Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2001. Monster is the leading global online careers site and flagship brand of TMP Worldwide (Nasdaq: TMPW) (ASX: TMP).
In the poll, young people were asked:
Do you believe that you can be whatever you want to be when you grow up?
65% Yes. If I work hard enough, I can achieve my dreams.
18% I could work hard and still fail to achieve my dreams.
17% Maybe. It's tough to say at my age what the future will bring.
Adults were asked:
Is your current career what you dreamed about when you were a kid?
52% No. Not at all.
23% Yes, somewhat. It is similar to some ideas I had as a kid.
13% I didn't dream about my future when I was a kid.
12% Yes, definitely. I have fulfilled my dreams.
"Many students do not have clear career paths mapped out when they are younger; many just have ideas in their heads," said Jeff Taylor, CEO of Monster.com. "That's why it is important that young people get exposure to workplace experiences at an early age, through initiatives such as Job Shadow Day, so that they can discover what kinds of education and experience they need to make their dreams come true."
Monster.com is the host of Virtual Job Shadowing, a year-round initiative to give young people access to "career mentors" via the Internet (www.jobshadow.monster.com). The project is part of Monster.com's $1.2 million commitment as national sponsor of Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2001, a nationwide effort, beginning on February 2nd, to provide over one million young people with job shadowing opportunities. Job Shadow Day is a collaboration of America's Promise -- The Alliance for Youth, the National School-to-Work office, Junior Achievement and the American Society of Association Executives.
Virtual Job Shadowing will feature profiles of a wide variety of "career" mentors -- working professionals from a graphic designer to a financial analyst to a CEO, who will share their experiences with young people via the Internet. The site will include regularly scheduled chats with mentors as well as career counselors. The lesson plan, which will be available online, will include such elements as an interest inventory, activities on identifying which careers best fit students' interests, and how to use the Virtual Job Shadowing site to calculate what kinds of education you need for a chosen career.
One of the goals of this year's Job Shadow Day is to increase the number of businesses participating to 100,000 for 2001, from 75,000 in 2000. As part of its sponsorship, Monster.com ran a television ad during the month of January promoting the initiative. Virtual Job Shadowing will also appear on both the official Job Shadow Day Web site (www.jobshadow.org ) and on Monster.com (www.jobshadow.monster.com), which will give students access to real-life mentors and career information in order to explore a variety of careers.
