The Monster Meter Says: Social Impact of Job Is Not Important to Majority of Americans

MAYNARD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 29, 2001--According to the latest Monster Meter, 27 percent of Americans would only take a job if it had a positive impact on society, while 33 percent of respondents see no importance in the social impact of their work. The remaining 40 percent simply see their job's social impact as a fringe benefit. The Monster Meter, a product of Monster.com(R), the leading global online careers site and flagship brand of TMP Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ: TMPW), is an ongoing series of online polls that gauge users' opinions on a variety of topics relating to careers, the economy, and the workplace.

The Monster Meter asked "How important is it for your job to have a social impact?" A total of 7,177 votes were cast - revealing:

  • 40% (2846 votes) said: "A little. My career is the focus, and helping others is a fringe benefit."

  • 33% (2349 votes) said: "Not at all. I need to worry about taking care of me right now."

  • 27% (1982 votes) said: "Very. I wouldn't take a job unless it benefited others."

"These figures are a comment on the level of desperation in the workplace right now (survival of the fittest and all that is very real for a majority of employees). They also reflect the demographics that more online job-seekers work in business than in non-profits," said Barbara Reinhold, Monster.com's career coach. "I think it's encouraging that 27 percent of respondents felt that service to others should be an essential part of a person's career. In today's economic environment, it often comes down to a 'you vs me game' where it's dangerous not to think first of yourself."

The results of the current Monster Meter are based on votes cast by Monster.com users from August 20 to August 26, 2001. Only one vote per user is counted toward the final tabulation.
