Empty-Nest No More: 64 Percent of College Students Plan To Live with Their Parents after Graduation

MonsterTRAK Poll Reveals Marked Increase in Number of Students Planning to Live at Home after Graduation

MAYNARD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 2004-- With the 2004 college graduation season in full swing, one might expect new graduates to be not only celebrating their degree but also the newfound freedom of officially living on one's own. However, there is a rising trend towards living at home after graduation, which is compounded by the continued tight job market for entry-level jobs. In fact, according to a recent MonsterTRAK poll, 64 percent of students plan to live with their parents after graduation - an increase of 7 percent when the same question was asked just two months prior. MonsterTRAK is a product of Monster(R), the leading global online careers site and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ:MNST).

In an online poll conducted in May 2004 (a), MonsterTRAK asked,

"How long do you plan to live with your parents after graduation?"

  • A total of 1,108 votes were cast between May 14th - 26th, 2004, revealing 64 percent of students planning to live at home with their parents after graduation:
0 months. Been there, done that. (402 votes) 36% One to six months. (283 votes) 26% Seven months to one year. (180 votes) 16% More than one year. (243 votes) 22%

Two months earlier (b), the percentage of students saying they planned to live at home after graduation was considerably lower at 57 percent:

  • A total of 1,092 votes were cast March 1st - 8th, 2004, revealing:

0 months. Been there, done that. (472 votes) 43% One to six months. (247 votes) 23% Seven months to one year. (150 votes) 14% More than one year. (223 votes) 20%

"With a tight labor market for entry-level jobs, students are faced with a far different post-commencement scenario than what they envisioned entering college four years ago," said Michelle Forker, senior vice president, Monster Campus. "With the high cost of living, students graduating this year are beginning to realize the potential advantages of living with their parents as they embark on their first job or an extended job search."
