Maynard, MA – May 22, 2000 – When it comes to finding their first job, today's college grads have the same concerns as students a generation ago, but they are using new tools to overcome these challenges. College students are looking to the Web to not only find jobs, but for career advice and guidance, according to Monster.com, the leading global online careers site and flagship brand of TMP Worldwide (NASDAQ: "TMPW"; ASX: "TMP").
“In the past year, Monster Campus site traffic has increased dramatically, which tells us more and more students are looking for job opportunities and advice online, says Mike Bennett, director of Campus Development at Monster.com. “In fact, a recent Monster.com online poll surveying more than 700 students revealed that 44% look to online career sites first, before searching several other traditional methods, such as help wanted ads, college career centers and job placement agencies.”
These findings represent quite a contrast from 10 years ago, when online job sites were not even in existence and students relied on the Sunday newspaper and university career center to research job openings and seek career advice.
In a second Monster.com poll that asked students what they liked least about job-hunting, preparing for and going on interviews was the number one answer. Searching for job opportunities and writing resumes followed closely behind.
“Many recent and soon-to-be college graduates don't know what to do with their lives, and thinking about the whole job search process – interviewing, networking, resume writing – can be quite nerve-wracking,” said Monster.com Campus Career Coach Peter Vogt. “The Internet has created new outlets for students looking to build careers and achieve goals. Monster.com's Campus Community addresses these career concerns through interactive tools and resources. In doing so, Monster Campus is ‘humanizing' a student's career development experience on the Internet.”
Monster Campus (http://campus.monster.com) helps students looking for internship programs or their first career opportunity to define and achieve their career goals. It provides a comprehensive resource for jobs as well as an online community support system for the very real anxiety associated with the entire career development process - whether you're a freshman just starting to think about your career or a senior about to enter the “real world.”
Monster Campus features are organized in sequential steps that group related tools and quizzes, advice and resources. From Self-Assessment to The Real World, Monster Campus content is an easy-to-navigate guide to finding a first job. Features include:
Resume Builder – Step-by-step instruction not only teaches first-time job seekers how to build a resume, but how to market their university and other experiences. Job seekers can post their resume in Monster.com's database, enabling quick and easy access by employers. Three levels of confidentiality offer added privacy.
Virtual Interview – This interactive session allows interviewees to practice their interviewing skills in a private environment before heading into the real world. Questions range from practical to zany; puffball to killer.
Campus Outlook Message Board – Led by Monster Campus career experts, this forum answers a broad range of college students' concerns, including learning about oneself (e.g., interests, skills, values, and personality), exploring careers, picking a major, gaining work experience, finding job leads, and landing a rewarding position after graduation.
Chat Rooms – Communicating with peers enables students to share intern experiences, post queries for job opportunities in the U.S. and abroad, and network with thousands of alumni in a variety of industries.
Tools and Quizzes – A variety of tools -- from self-assessment links, to time management and “Are you a team player?” quizzes, to the cost of living calculator -- give students the opportunity to appraise their skills and abilities.
