AIDS Action Committee, Monster.com, and Mayor Menino Announce the Monster Challenge: Tri-Boston; Boston's First World-Class Triathlon Planned for Labor Day Weekend
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 27, 2001--The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts, Monster.com(R), and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino today announced the creation of The Monster Challenge: Tri-Boston, the first world-class triathlon to be held in downtown Boston. The event will take place on Sunday, September 2, 2001.
"The Monster Challenge is a perfect example of the types of public/private partnerships I have worked to promote throughout my administration," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. "This event will showcase our city, our clean harbor, and will benefit one of our outstanding non-profit organizations."
Monster.com, the leading global online careers site and flagship brand of TMP Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ: TMPW), has signed an exclusive three-year deal to be the title sponsor of The Monster Challenge: Tri-Boston. The deal was brokered by Global Strategies Group, a Boston-based sports marketing firm.
"The triathlon is a physically grueling event that challenges and dares athletes to `Never Settle', just as Monster.com challenges job seekers to never settle in their careers and in life," said Scott Betty, director of marketing. "We are always looking for unique and innovative ways to promote and brand Monster. The Monster Challenge: Tri-Boston provides us with the opportunity to sponsor a world-class event, run by the most admirable of organizations, in the city that Monster calls home."
The Monster Challenge will be directed by Dave McGillivray, president of Dave McGillivary Sports Enterprises, Inc. McGillivray is the long-time race director of the Boston Marathon and has personally managed over 150 triathlons, including the 1998 Goodwill Games Triathlon and the 1990 Triathlon World Championships.
"As a former competitive triathlete and race director for some of the world's top events, it has been a long-time dream of mine to conduct a major triathlon in Boston," said McGillivray. The Monster Challenge: Tri-Boston would not be possible without the support of Mayor Menino, the City of Boston, the Metropolitan District Commission, numerous other city and state agencies, as well as the efforts of the AIDS Action Committee and the generous financial support of Monster.com. I look forward to showing the world once again that Boston is a city that has the experience and expertise to produce world-class events."
The World Trade Center will serve as the official venue for The Monster Challenge: Tri-Boston, hosting the swim, transition, and start/finish portions of the race. The bike will be conducted along the Charles River on Memorial Drive, while the run will take place throughout the Seaport District before finishing at the World Trade Center. An estimated 1,000 participants are expected to compete, including some of the world's most successful triathletes, such as three-time World Champion Karen Smyers of Lincoln, MA. The Monster Challenge will feature two distances - Olympic Distance for elite and experienced athletes (1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run) and Sprint Distance for age group competitors and relay teams (1/2 mile swim, 20K bike, 5K run).
Participants will be required to raise pledges in support of AIDS Action Committee. The requirement for individuals will be $500, while relay teams will be asked to raise $750. Money raised by The Monster Challenge: Tri-Boston will support AIDS Action in its mission to prevent new HIV infections in Massachusetts and to advocate and care for those already infected. According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, there are nearly 13,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in the state and two new people are infected every day.
"At a time when fundraising for AIDS organizations has become increasingly difficult, we are incredibly lucky to have Monster.com make such a strong financial commitment to an event that not only raises money for AIDS Action but also raises awareness of the benefits of good health and fitness for all people, especially those affected by HIV and AIDS," said Larry Kessler, Executive Director of AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts.
