1 out of every 10 Spaniards say they could get a job without mastering a second language

Please note: This is a translation.

  • Although, the 43% of respondents said that knowing another language is important, but they do not speak it frequently at work
  • 30% of Spaniards deemed it essential in their current job
  • Instead, a 16% of Spaniards speak two languages or more and haven’t found an employment

Madrid, March 2010 – Nowadays, being  a multilingual person seems a minimum requirement when professionals are seeking for employment. However, according to a recent study conducted by Monster.es, the leader global online employment solution, 11% of the Spanish who do not speak a second language don’t consider it important.

This research also shows that the 43% of the respondents deemed it really important to position in the professional market, but they still don’t speak it every day at their current jobs. This could lead to many Spaniards  considering it unimportant to learn a second language, limiting their careers in a really competitive market.

According to this survey carried out by Monster, there is a growing interest of Spaniards to dominate a second, even a third language. The 30% of respondents said that speaking more than one language was essential for employment, and thanks to this advantage, they have found their current jobs.

The truth is that most of the offers in the net demand a high or medium second language level, especially English. Also French, German and even Chinese have increased their penetration in the labor markets. However, this study by Monster.es determined that 16% of Spaniards who speak more than one language, do not consider it essential to find a job.

The Monster survey gathered the responses of the question "Do you think knowing a second language is important to finding a job?

Spain Second Language

The results have revealed the following:

-Yes, if I did not speak a second language, I would not have found
my current job.                                                                                                      30%
-Yes, I think is important but I don’t speak it
in my daily work.                                                                                                   43%
-No, I speak more than one language and that never helped me
find a job.

16%
-No, I do not speak any other language and do not consider it
big problem.                                                                                                           11%

The Spaniard´s general belief is that speaking a second language - is important to find a job, need it or not in the development of their professional duties. Over 70% of the respondents have this opinion.

The globalization have caused that most markets speak a universal language: English. The lack of knowledge of foreign languages could produce a disadvantage on all those who speaks more than one. “Professionals who are fluent only in one language have more problems to position themselves in a competitive professional market. There is increasing competition and we must not forget that we are in a global market, where it is really important to communicate and an advantage to know how to do it” says Veronica Milo Monster.es Marketing Manager.
